Yacht or Catamaran in Cancun? How to Choose for Your Group

One of the first questions our guests ask is whether they should book a yacht or a catamaran. Both are great ways to explore Cancun and Isla Mujeres privately, but they offer a different experience. The right choice depends mostly on your group size, what you want to do on board and your budget.

The short version

• Choose a catamaran if you have a big group, want lots of open deck space, a very stable ride and a relaxed party or family atmosphere.
• Choose a motor yacht if you want more speed, air-conditioned interiors, a more private and luxurious feel, or you plan to cover more distance.

Catamarans: space and stability

A catamaran has two hulls, which makes it wide and very stable. That means less rocking at anchor, a lot of room to walk around, big sun nets and decks for lounging, and easy access to the water for swimming and snorkeling.

Best for: large groups, birthdays, bachelorette parties, corporate outings, families with kids, and anyone who gets seasick easily.

Good to know: catamarans are usually slower than motor yachts, and many have more open-air space than enclosed, air-conditioned areas.

Motor yachts: speed, comfort and privacy

A motor yacht is faster, so you spend less time cruising and more time at your stops. Most have air-conditioned salons and cabins, bathrooms, sound systems and shaded lounges, and the larger ones add flybridges and multiple decks.

Best for: couples, families and small to medium groups who want comfort and style, special occasions like proposals and anniversaries, and longer trips.

Good to know: for the same number of guests, a large luxury yacht usually costs more than a catamaran.
