Cancun to Isla Mujeres by Private Yacht: What to Expect

Yacht Charters in Cancun

A private yacht trip from Cancun to Isla Mujeres is the most popular charter we run, and for good reason. The island sits only about 13 km (8 miles) off the coast, the water in between is that famous Caribbean turquoise, and with your own boat you set the pace: swim when you want, eat when you want, and skip the crowds of the shared ferries and party catamarans.

Here is how a typical day works, so you know exactly what to expect before you book.

How long does it take to get to Isla Mujeres by yacht?

From the marinas in the Cancun hotel zone and Puerto Juárez, most yachts reach the north tip of Isla Mujeres in roughly 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the boat and the sea that day. Faster motor yachts get there sooner; sailboats and large catamarans take a little longer but the ride is part of the fun.

That is why we recommend at least 4 hours for an Isla Mujeres trip. With 6 to 8 hours you can add a long lunch on the island and a second swim stop without rushing.

The classic route

1. Playa Norte

Most charters anchor first off Playa Norte, one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico: shallow, calm, crystal-clear water where everyone can swim, float or stand in waist-deep sea. It is the perfect first stop for families and groups.

2. Snorkeling

Next, your captain can take you to a snorkel spot along the island’s protected west side. Snorkel gear is usually available on board; ask us when you book. The reefs around Isla Mujeres are part of a national marine park, so a small park fee or wristband may apply at some spots.

3. Lunch on the island or on board

You can dock and eat at a restaurant or beach club on Isla Mujeres, or have food served on the yacht. Many of our guests add catering, a chef, drinks packages or a DJ; just tell us what you have in mind.

4. Cruise back along the coast

On the way back many groups slow down to enjoy the views of the island and the Cancun skyline, especially in the late afternoon when the light is beautiful.

The exact route always depends on the weather and sea conditions. Your captain will adjust it to keep everyone safe and comfortable, especially on windy days.

Which boat should you choose?

What to bring

  • Swimsuit, towel and a change of clothes
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Cash or card if you plan to eat or shop on the island
  • A light jacket for the ride back in winter months
  • Seasickness tablets if you are sensitive to motion (take them before boarding)

How much does it cost?

Price depends mainly on the size of the boat, the number of hours and any extras such as food, drinks or water toys. As a reference, smaller yachts start at around $100 to $220 USD per hour and large luxury yachts and catamarans cost more. We explain all the factors in our guide on how yacht charter prices work in Cancun.
